Morels are one of the most sought after mushrooms anywhere. They have a bold unique taste that is exquisite and satisfying and they dehydrate and hold there flavor for many years. They are also an easy mushroom to identify, but also difficult to find. Morels typically fruit in the spring but will also fruit in the fall for several years after planting.

Morel mushrooms are difficult to grow indoors, although Paul Stamets and others have had limited success with black morels. Black morels are the easier of the morels to grow indoors. Outdoor habitats are far easier and are usually successful. Morel mushrooms do not grow in tropical areas, they prefer seasonal changes and especially cold wet or snowy winters to fruit well in the spring. Our Black Morel strain is one of the easiest to grow and will colonize most grains very easily.

You can find videos on YouTube with various methods of indoor and outdoor cultivation but the easiest way to grow is outdoors. If growing outdoors you must live in a state where the winter temperatures dip below freezing (32 degrees) for at least 24 hours. The best time to plant these will be March/April or October/November.

You will colonize any type of grain spawn like rye berries with the liquid culture, find a shady area, preferably under a hardwood tree like Oak, Elm, Ash, Elder. Dig out a small area and mix the grain spawn with some hardwood chips, sawdust or pellets add some coir and water. Some people also like to add wood ashes as well. Cover with straw or anything to keep moisture in. The important part is to plant when the ground is cold and temperatures will drop below 32 degrees for at least 12-24 hours or longer. Keep the patch damp during dry spells and you will typically see results the next season. Plant in the Spring for Mushrooms in the Fall or plant in the Fall for mushrooms in the Spring.
