Our Malt extract agar plates are made with the perfect blend of agar, organic malt extract, organic locust bean gum & organic yeast extract. We add 0.01% chloramphenicol to prevent bacterial growth while stimulating the growth of mushroom mycelium. Midwest's agar plates are made fresh daily! What is Agar? How do I use it?

Agar plates have been used for decades by mushroom growing enthusiasts and are becoming more popular again. You start by squirting a tiny amount of spore solution on the plate. Incubate for a few days and white mycelium patches begin to form. Agar lets you choose the fastest growing and most robust mycelium for use in your growing project while being able to isolate any mold without ruining your culture plate.

Isolating a culture is how the experts grow the biggest and best mushrooms, the ones you see in pictures on the many forums. After you choose your mycelium colony to use, create a still air box or use a flow hood and cut a piece of the agar out and place into a spawn bag, spawn jar or liquid culture to grow. Working with agar seems intimidating and prone to contamination but with the chloramphenicol added, the risks are much lower and easier than you can imagine!

There is no doubt this is something that should have been sold years ago! I really love seeing the growth in the dark and light, you really can see different stuff! Will be back for more soon!

I thought why not when buying these and I don't think I can go back to regular agar! You can see everything grow like normal agar plates in the light. I had a questionable liquid culture and within 3 days I thought there was normal growth (well it appeared to be) I turned off the lights and noticed a weird spot, which the next day turned out to be mold!! Crazy!! The only thing I suggest is using a regular incandescent old school light to shine on these before turning the lights off. LED lights dont charge the glowing stuff well.

I make my own plates but I got these to check whether my spores were clean or contaminated (since I wasn't sure if I was pouring wrong), and so far each plate have been consistently clean and sterile. I did lose two plates to contamination after a few days, but I think the spores themselves are contaminated so it's not on the plates themselves (they've contaminated my other agar plates too). However since my other spores seem to be happy on this agar, I can comfortably say that these are definitely clean sterile dishes.

Otherwise beautiful bubble-less pours with a nice thin layer so I can see through it. Some of them had a little condensation forming on the lids making it hard to see the growth inside, but so far it's been harmless to the mycelium so I can't complain. Great price and they were packaged neatly as well! They were incredibly helpful in confirming my suspicion that my spores weren't clean enough.
