How a ready-to-fruit kit works

The bag arrives partially colonized on purpose. Your job is to let colonization finish, then use light to trigger fruiting and keep the inside of the bag humid.

1Finish colonizing

Keep the box in a room at about 67–74°F for one to two weeks, until the rice is fully covered in white mycelium.

2Turn on the light

Take the bag out of the box and give it 12–16 hours of light a day. Light is the fruiting trigger for this species.

3Snip, mist, clip

When small orange pins appear, cut off the very top of the bag, mist the inside walls, fold it closed and hold it with a paper clip.

4Repeat and harvest

Re-mist the inside walls every few days to add air and humidity. Harvest the orange fingers at full size for 3–4 flushes.

Light matters more here than with any other kit: Cordyceps uses light as the actual signal to switch from colonizing to fruiting, not just to color the fruit. Keep the bag somewhere with consistent light for 12–16 hours a day once it's fully colonized.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my kit arrive only partially colonized?

That's by design. The spawn finishes colonizing in your space, so the first step is a week or two at 67–74°F until the rice is fully white, not opening the bag right away.

How long until my Cordyceps kit starts fruiting?

Usually 15–30 days, depending on how much colonization remained when it arrived. Once it's fully colonized and under light, orange pins often follow within one to two weeks.

Does it really need light to fruit?

Yes. Unlike species that fruit fine in dim rooms, Cordyceps militaris uses light as the trigger to start fruiting. Plan on 12–16 hours a day once colonization is complete.

How many harvests will one kit give me?

Three to four flushes with proper care. Keep misting the inside walls every few days between flushes.

What do I do with Cordyceps once I harvest it?

Most growers dry the fruiting bodies and use them in tea or extracts. It isn't usually cooked and eaten the way you'd prepare an oyster mushroom.

What's the difference between this kit and Cordyceps liquid culture?

We received the kits all in one package, packed with care as well as beautifully colonized and just about all of them ready to pin upon arrival! The only complaint I have is I was unaware of how small the kits were as I was expecting more of a regular mushroom kits size (5-8 lbs) but am happy about their health non the less! Picture:

Arrived almost fully colonized, took about 3-4 weeks after exposing to light to start seeing little mushrooms, now I cut the bag and misted and they are taking off! Gonna be a nice size crop!
