Our King Trumpet (King Oyster) grow kit is a 5 lb block fully colonized with first-generation Pleurotus eryngii. It grows thick, meaty white stems under small brown caps, and it's one of the highest-yielding kits we sell. It takes a few weeks longer to pin than other oysters, so set it up and be patient.
Dense stems with a scallop-like texture. Slice into rounds and sear for a caramelized crust.

The hard parts of mushroom growing (sterilization, inoculation and colonization) are done before the block ships. Your job is to trigger fruiting and keep the surface from drying out.
Make one slit across the face of the block as shown in the instructions. Fresh air on the mycelium is the signal to stop feeding and start fruiting.
Lightly mist the cut face once or twice a day with the included mister. Keep the surface from drying out; don't leave standing water.
Give it 10–12 hours of indirect light a day and good air exchange. Don't mist more just because it's slower to start than other oysters.
Pick while the caps are small, tight and slightly domed. Then stop misting for about a week to let the block rest before the next flush.
Harvest before the caps flatten: King Trumpet is best while the cap is small and slightly convex. Once it flattens and the edges curl, the stem turns spongy and loses its meaty bite.

Expect roughly three to four weeks before mushrooms start forming. That's normal for King Trumpet and slower than most oysters; don't increase misting just because it's taking longer.
No. The kit is designed to fruit in open room air with daily misting. In dry homes, especially in winter with forced-air heat, a humidity tent holds moisture around the block so you mist less often and get fuller clusters.

Indoors is strongly preferred. The block needs steady temperatures and protection from wind, direct sun and insects; fungus gnats find an exposed block quickly. A kitchen counter, bathroom shelf or any spot out of direct sunlight works well.

I have been successfully growing for years. These King Trumps are the best tasting and biggest mushrooms I have grown!
