Culture Blend is the same liquid culture formula Myco Labs has used in our own lab for 15 years, pre-blended as a dry mix. Weigh it, dissolve it in hot water and pressure cook for sterile broth ready for spores, liquid culture or agar. One 250 g pouch makes more than 3 gallons.

  • Makes 3+ gallons: about 12 quart or 25 pint jars per pouch
  • Sugars plus nitrogen: malt extract, dextrose, soy peptone and our nutrient blend
  • Consistent batches: just 19.4 g per quart of water, measured by weight
  • Fast prep: sterilize 30 minutes at 15 PSI
  • Resealable pouch: 250 g (8.82 oz), stores cool and dry

Myco Labs Liquid Culture Dry Premix

Myco Labs Liquid Culture Premix – Formula 15 (250 g, Makes 3+ Gallons)

    Price: $19.99

Culture Blend is the formula behind every jar of liquid culture we've produced at Myco Labs for the last 15 years, pre-blended as a dry mix. Extra light malt extract, dextrose, soy peptone and our nutritional supplement and mineral blend come measured and mixed in one resealable pouch. Weigh it, dissolve it in hot water, pressure cook, and you have sterile broth ready for spores, liquid culture or an agar wedge. One 250 g pouch makes more than 3 US gallons.

    What makes Culture Blend work

Three dishes of powdered liquid culture ingredients: malt extract, dextrose and soy peptone Carbon and nitrogen together

Most homemade recipes are sugar and water. We add soy peptone and our nutritional supplement blend so mycelium has nitrogen to build with, not just sugar to burn.

At the label ratio, 250 g covers roughly 12 quart jars or 25 pint jars. Enough to keep a library of cultures going for a long while.

One blend and one weight per volume of water. When a culture performs well, you can make the exact same broth again.

Making liquid culture with Culture Blend

All you add is water, jars with injection-port lids, and a pressure cooker.

Gloved hand scooping liquid culture premix powder into a pitcher of hot water 1Dissolve

Weigh the premix and stir it into hot water until no powder remains.

Pale golden liquid culture broth being poured into a jar, leaving headspace at the top 2Fill jars

Pour the broth into your jars and leave headspace for air and swirling.

Open pressure canner with jars of liquid culture broth inside 3Sterilize

Pressure cook 30 minutes at 15 PSI. Going much longer darkens the sugars.

Gloved hand injecting a syringe through the black injection port of a liquid culture jar lid 4Inoculate

Once jars are at room temperature, add 3–5 cc of spore solution or liquid culture, or a clean agar wedge.

From our lab: pour the dissolved mix through a paper coffee filter before filling jars to take out malt sediment. Clearer broth makes new growth easier to spot and draws through a needle more easily. Incubate at 76–82°F out of direct light and swirl the jars regularly.

    Weigh it, don't scoop it

Quart jar of liquid culture full of white mycelium three weeks after inoculation, on a black background Quart jar, three weeks after inoculation

Powder packs down differently every time you scoop it, so spoon measurements change the strength of your broth from batch to batch. A gram scale takes that variable out. Use these amounts per volume of water:

    • 9.7 g per US pint
    • 19.4 g per US quart
    • 20.5 g per liter
    • 77.5 g per US gallon

Expect amber, not clear. Culture Blend is malt-based, so finished broth is yellow to light amber. That's normal, and it stays transparent enough to watch mycelium grow.

    Frequently asked questions

How much broth does one pouch make?

More than 3 US gallons at the label ratio of 19.4 g per quart. That's roughly 12 quart jars or 25 pint jars.

How much premix goes in each jar?

Weigh 9.7 g for each US pint of water, 19.4 g per US quart, 20.5 g per liter, or 77.5 g per US gallon. A gram scale gives you the same broth strength every time; measuring spoons don't.

What ingredients are in Culture Blend?

Extra light malt extract, dextrose, soy peptone, and our proprietary nutritional supplement and mineral blend. It's the same formula Myco Labs has refined over 15 years of producing liquid cultures.

Why is my broth amber instead of clear?

The malt extract gives the broth a yellow to light amber color, so it won't look like water, and that's expected. If it turns dark brown, it was cooked too long; stick to 30 minutes at 15 PSI.

    Should I filter the broth?

It's optional. Running the dissolved mix through a paper coffee filter before filling jars removes malt sediment, which makes contamination and new growth easier to see and keeps the culture flowing smoothly through a needle.

How long do I pressure cook it?

30 minutes at 15 PSI. Let the jars cool completely to room temperature before you inoculate.

What can I inoculate it with?

Spore solution, an existing liquid culture, or a clean wedge of colonized agar. For a jar, 3 to 5 cc of spore solution or liquid culture is plenty.

How do I store the dry mix?

Keep the pouch sealed in a cool, dry place and use a clean, dry utensil every time you measure. The expiration date is printed on the back of each pouch. Culture Blend is for mushroom cultivation only and is not for human consumption.
