A single spore syringe only reaches so far on its own. Put 3-5 cc of it into this jar of sterile nutrient broth, and within days you have a jar of living mycelium big enough to inoculate up to 20 spawn bags or 84 half-pint jars, colonizing grain faster than spores alone.

Why run liquid culture

Spores have to germinate before they do anything, and inside a bag of grain that delay gives contaminants a head start. Liquid culture moves germination into a sealed jar you can watch, so the grain gets mycelium that is already growing.

  • Stretch one syringe across 20 or more bags.
  • Faster colonization than inoculating grain with spores.
  • Easy expansion of a favorite culture from spores or a clean agar wedge.
  • Even inoculation, with live mycelium spread through every dose.
  • Lower cost per grow, with more output from every syringe you buy.

What's in the kit

  • 10 oz sterilized liquid culture broth in a pint jar
  • Dual-layer 0.22 micron waterproof filter lid
  • Self-healing injection port
  • Magnetic stir bar
  • High-power external magnet
  • 50 cc Luer lock syringe
  • 16-gauge sterile needle

How to use it

1Inoculate

Wipe the port with an alcohol pad and inject 3-5 cc of spore solution or liquid culture, or drop in a clean agar wedge.

2Incubate

Keep the jar at 76-82°F, away from direct light.

3Stir

Spin it regularly with the stir bar and external magnet to keep the mycelium suspended. White clouds usually show in 4-5 days.

4Draw and use

Pull culture into the 50 cc syringe and inoculate grain jars or spawn bags.

The broth: our own blend of distilled water, dextrose, extra light malt extract and peptone, pressure sterilized and ready to inject. Nothing to mix or cook.

Common questions

How much spore solution should I inject?

3 to 5 cc. Wipe the self-healing port with an alcohol pad first and let it dry. You can also start the jar from another liquid culture or a clean agar wedge.

How long until it is ready to use?

White mycelium usually appears within 4 to 5 days at 76 to 82 degrees F, and most jars are ready to draw from in about a week to ten days. Go by the growth, since species and starting material both change the pace.

How many bags or jars will one kit inoculate?

Up to 20 spawn bags or 84 half-pint jars, depending on how much you put in each.

How long does the kit keep?

For best results use it within 2 to 3 weeks of arrival and keep it refrigerated before and after use. Once colonized, the culture keeps in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 months.

Do I need a stir plate?

No. The included stir bar and external magnet let you spin the culture by hand. A magnetic stir plate is an optional upgrade that keeps the mycelium evenly suspended and easier to draw.
