Liquid culture is how most growers stretch one syringe of genetics across a whole run of grain. Inject spores or a culture into a sterile jar of nutrient broth, let the mycelium grow out, then draw it back up to inoculate grain bags and jars. Everything you need to run your own is here: ready-to-use LC kits, air-infused systems, reusable Luer lock lids, stir plates and our own dry LC premix.

A standard liquid culture jar breathes passively through a filter disc, and oxygen runs short just as the mycelium needs it most. That's when cultures harden into dense clumps that clog the needle and inoculate unevenly. Active Air fixes that by pushing sterile, filtered air into the jar on a timer, so the mycelium stays fine, fluid and suspended. It's a shippable version of the bubbling setup we've run in our own lab for years, built from high-temperature parts that sterilize and reuse. 28...

Five PTFE-coated magnetic stir bars, each 30 x 7 mm, with a raised center pivot ring. The ring lets the bar spin on a small contact point instead of dragging its whole length across the bottom of your jar. Put one in each liquid culture jar before you sterilize it, then spin the culture on a stir plate or with an external magnet. The PTFE coating is non-stick, non-reactive and rated from -196°C to 250°C, comfortably above pressure cooker temperatures. 5-packPTFE coatedCenter pivot...

This magnetic stir plate spins liquid culture and lab solutions anywhere from 350 to 4000 RPM on a brushless DC motor, with a stepless dial so you can set exactly the speed you want. It stirs up to 2000 ml and comes with a stir bar, so it is ready to run out of the box. Keeping liquid culture moving breaks up the mycelium and keeps it evenly suspended, which means every syringe you draw carries about the same amount of culture. 350-4000 RPMUp to 2000 mlBrushless motorStir bar included 4000Max...

The Myco Lid Pro is our reusable liquid culture lid for standard wide-mouth mason jars. Instead of punching a needle through the same self-healing port over and over, you draw culture through a dedicated Luer Lock port, while a 0.45 micron syringe filter handles gas exchange. The lid stays on the jar from sterilization to the last syringe. The body is autoclavable Delrin (POM), the gasket rotates independently so the seal seats without twisting, and a raised pad on top gives you a clean place...

Culture Blend is the formula behind every jar of liquid culture we've produced at Myco Labs for the last 15 years, pre-blended as a dry mix. Extra light malt extract, dextrose, soy peptone and our nutritional supplement and mineral blend come measured and mixed in one resealable pouch. Weigh it, dissolve it in hot water, pressure cook, and you have sterile broth ready for spores, liquid culture or an agar wedge. One 250 g pouch makes more than 3 US gallons. The Microppose Deep Draw is a 5 in, 16-gauge sterile needle made for mycology. It reaches the bottom of a liquid culture jar and deep into grain jars and spawn bags, and the 16G bore lets thick culture flow without clogging. Standard needles are about 1.5 in long, so you end up tipping jars to chase the last of your culture. How a liquid culture run works

                    1. Inoculate. Wipe the injection port with alcohol, flame-sterilize your needle and inject spores or a culture into the jar.
                    2. Grow it out. Keep the jar at room temperature and stir or swirl it each day. Wispy clouds of mycelium should form in clear broth.
                    3. Check it. Clear broth with mycelium is what you want. Milky, cloudy broth or a sour smell usually means bacteria. A drop on an agar plate is the surest test.
                    4. Draw and use. Stir, draw into a sterile syringe and inoculate sterilized grain bags or jars.

Want to skip the wait? Our ready-made liquid culture syringes are grown in our lab and ready to inoculate grain on arrival.

                    Common questions

                    What is liquid culture?

Liquid culture is living mycelium growing in a sterile nutrient broth. Growers use it to inoculate grain because it usually colonizes faster than spores, and one jar can inoculate many bags.

Can I put spores in a liquid culture jar?

Yes. Every kit here has a self-healing injection port that takes a spore syringe. Keep in mind that a culture started from spores is not isolated, so testing a drop on agar before you use it on grain is a good habit.

Do I need a stir plate?

No. Swirling the jar by hand once or twice a day works. A stir plate breaks the mycelium into finer pieces, which spreads it evenly and makes it easier to draw into a syringe.

How do I tell if my liquid culture is contaminated?

Healthy liquid culture has clear broth with white, wispy or cloud-like mycelium. Milky or evenly cloudy broth, a film on the surface or a sour smell are common signs of bacteria. When in doubt, put a drop on an agar plate and watch what grows.

Can I make my own liquid culture broth?

Yes. Our LC Premix, Formula 15 is the same recipe we use in our lab as a dry mix. Combine it with water, sterilize it in jars fitted with a Myco Lid Pro or similar injection-port lid, and let it cool before you inoculate.
